On January 20, 1996, I learned of the death of Tulane University Police Officer Gilbert Mast, killed in the line of duty. In the days that followed I learned of the family he left behind. I began to wonder what resources there were on the internet for spouses of police officers and when I checked into it I found few. Being familiar with discussion lists and knowing that there are even some for police officers themselves, but none for spouses of officers, I started "loveacop". With the help and support of my husband, a police officer himself, I was able to get loveacop on-line March, 1 1996. The membership of the list has since doubled. As the wife of a police officer, I know of the ups and downs of my husband's job and how those ups and downs effect our family, the roller coaster of emotions that come with being the spouse of an officer, the pride in being married to an officer and also the fear when he is on duty. I wanted to be able to share these feelings on-line with other spouses of officers and have them be able to share their feelings and experiences with others as well, in hopes of helping and supporting each other.
